The oil and gas industry is integral to Azerbaijan’s modern economy. As one of the world’s oldest oil producers (the world’s first oil well was drilled here in 1847), the industry continues to prosper with significant gains in production over the last decade.
Large offshore Caspian oil and gas fields and extensive onshore pipelines make Azerbaijan an important global player in the industry. The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline alone transports one million barrels of oil per day and the country has reserves of up to 7 billion barrels of oil (2009).
