According to a report by Platts earlier this week, ExxonMobil is reportedly looking at plans to develop a project to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) on Australia’s east coast (partially as a response to recent gas shortages in the region).

The state of Victoria could see the LNG terminal in operation as early as 2022 according to an ExxonMobil spokesman.

Gas shortages on Australia’s eastern seaboard have prompted moves to shore up future supplies. The shortages have been blamed on coal seam gas reserves being unable to keep pace with growing demand.

Whilst details on the size of the facility are not yet available, the proposed terminal will be competing with other LNG facilities, as Australian utility company AGL Energy and consortium Australian Industrial Energy plan to shore up gas supplies with their own terminals on the east coast- based on floating storage regasification units. AGL Energy’s terminal is likely to be located at Crib Point near Melbourne, coming online sometime in 2020-2021, whilst Australian Industrial Energy’s terminal is expected to be built in the state of New South Wales, potentially at Port Kembla, Newcastle or Port Botany.

Speaking to Platts, the ExxonMobil spokesman said:

“ExxonMobil would be able to bring world-class project experience in all facets of LNG development, production and regasification.”

“Combined with the existing Gippsland resource and infrastructure, an LNG import facility could ensure ExxonMobil can continue to meet our customers’ needs.”
