Michiel Merkus, Country Manager for the Netherlands, discusses our operations in the region and the variety of roles currently available.
How long has Fircroft operated in the Netherlands?

After seeing substantial growth possibilities within the Netherlands, Fircroft opened their office in Rijswijk to develop the Dutch energy market. In addition, our local presence in Rijswijk enables us to support our main clients in the area in the best possible way. The Dutch office opened in June 2010 and over the past five years, our experience and knowledge within this area has considerably grown.

Our current client base includes both the owner and operator companies as well as the engineering and service companies. The Dutch business is mostly growing in the oil and gas industry and the office focuses on contract recruitment for all stages of a client's project.

What is it like being Country Manager?

The role and responsibility of Country Manager is exciting and diverse. On a day-to-day basis I deal with all areas of the business from; operations, payroll, legal, business development, budgeting and controls. Every day is different and we strive to deliver the best recruitment solutions locally, focusing on a high service level, personal attention and managing/exceeding expectations of our clients and professionals.

Fircroft’s continued development within the Netherlands can be attributed to the team within the Rijswijk office, who ensure we are always quality orientated and provide a consistent professional service delivery to our clients, contractors and candidates in the Netherlands.
What is it like living in the Netherlands?

The Netherlands continues to be an extremely popular destination with expats, as there are numerous job opportunities across a number of disciplines. Despite the fact the Netherlands is one of the smallest countries in Europe, it is one of the wealthiest and most economically stable. Locals are known for being extremely hospitable and friendly, and with so many expats coming to work in the country, there will always be someone happy to help show you around or tell you the best places to eat, visit and socialise.

In the Netherlands, you can find reasonably priced housing in most areas and we assist our contractors with accommodation issues and connect them with local housing agencies. There is health insurance available to expats, as well as numerous language courses which can either be attended in the evenings or online if you would like to learn Dutch. Speaking Dutch is by no means essential if you are working here, however it can be advantageous if you will be speaking to locals. The majority of professionals in the Netherlands speak basic or intermediate English; nevertheless it may be beneficial for you to be able to communicate in Dutch in certain situations.

What roles are currently available?

The range of roles available is constantly changing, and there are currently numerous vacancies our team is working on such as Project Engineers and Project Managers, HSE Engineers, Construction Managers and Cost Controllers. Our expertise lies in the recruitment of technical professionals in both the down and upstream sectors.
