Saudi Aramco, Total and Daelim have jointly signed a preliminary agreement to construct a PIB petrochemical facility in the city of Jubail, on the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia.

The Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) of the plant is expected to begin immediately, with the aim to be completed by the fourth quarter of this year. The plant is planned to come on stream by 2024.

Polyisobutylene (PIB) is a high value-added chemical product used for a range of industrial applications such as adhesives, lubricants and fuel additives. The 80,000 tonne facility will be the first to produce PIB in the Kingdom, using feedstock from the existing Amiral complex in Jubail.

The specialty plant will use Daelim’s proprietary technology to produce a wide range of products from conventional PIB (CPIB) to highly reactive PIB (HR-PIB)

South Korean industrial group Daelim currently holds the global no.1 market share in PIB as well as four of the largest ethylene facilities in northeast Asia. A statement announcing the agreement said:

“The facility’s location in Saudi Arabia will give Daelim access to competitive feedstock and energy, with large infrastructure, to better serve customers in the Middle East and markets across Europe and Asia.”

By launching the project, state-owned Aramco are hoping to expand the Kingdom’s refining and petrochemical capacities to maximise the value of each barrel of oil and gas produced in the region.
