Bentley unveil the new Bentayga

Bentley have revealed the new-look, updated-spec Bentayga and it’s a bold evolution for the luxury SUV.

The original, launched in 2015, was a major shift for the legendary car brand as their first SUV. It set the scene for a new era of high-end super SUVs such as the Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Lamborghini Urus, yet remained ahead of the competition thanks to an audacious look with an opulent feel and outstanding performance - everything you’d expect from this brand really.

The Bentayga became a core of Bentley’s range, selling more than 20,000 models and birthing variations such as the Bentayga diesel (launched in 2016), the Bentayga V8 (2018) and the Bentayga Hybrid (2018).

Having exhausted seemingly every variation of the now-iconic design, there was only one thing left to do. Reinvent the Bentayga.

The second generation has doubled down on the striking design, lifting that vertical face even higher to deliver an unmissable profile with sharp lines and powerful edges. The grill is given a new matrix style and is larger and 30mm higher than the old model, for maximum impact.

The bonnet now sweeps down to meet the grille for a streamlined look that hints at the powerful potential of the 542bhp V8 engine.

Each panel is redesigned for a new, but no less distinctive shape. A large wing vent and sills with a rising design create a unique aesthetic and the option for additional Blackline Specification promises a dramatic, powerful look.

The refreshed design is more than just an upgraded exterior. Bentley say that their new interior is “a thoughtfully crafted environment in which to enjoy any journey, with painstaking attention to detail elevating it to truly luxurious levels”.

Reshaped frames create a “luxury cocoon” inside, with plush leather and wood panels ensuring that sophisticated style. There’s enough shining metal elements - including a 3D aluminium trim on the door - to add a modern feel. Which is off course enhanced by the state-of-the-art infotainment features including a high-resolution 10.9” touchscreen in the centre panel, plus a touchscreen remote for passengers to control the interior experience.

So the Bentayga is certainly a luxury, comfortable statement piece, but how about the performance?

The Bentayga promises an advanced V8 engine with a maximum torque of 770Nm at an engine speed of under 2,000 rpm, giving the vehicle a top speed of 180mph (290km/h). 0-60 mph can be reached in 4.4 seconds.

As standard the Bentayga has four standard on-road drive modes, with an additional four available with the All-Terrain Specification. This includes Snow and Wet Grass, Dirt and Gravel, Mud and Trail, and Sand. Specific off-road systems - such as Hill Descent Control - are applicable automatically as needed. The All-Terrain Specification also adds robust underfloor protection, a luggage management system and a specific screen on the infotainment system to show useful terrain information.

Stop-start is standard and the engine has a variable displacement which shuts off four of the eight cylinders when not required, to increase efficiency. Bentley say that this gives the Bentayga a range of 397 miles or 639km (WLTP).

A reworked variation for the V6 petrol-electric pug-in hybrid engine is also expected to be launched in the new Bentayga separately later this year.
