Boeing is teaming up with America’s largest military shipbuilding company, Huntington Ingalls, to develop underwater drones for the U.S. Navy. The partnership arises as the U.S. Navy focuses on developing what they call extra-large unmanned undersea vehicles which could change how the military operates.

Boeing are already working on creating the Echo Voyager, a full autonomous underwater vehicle designed for repeated use. Measuring 51 feet long, the vehicle is built to operate at sea for months at a time with a hybrid rechargeable power system. Various modules will allow the drone to accomplish different types of missions, like dropping mines, firing missiles and collecting data.

The additional help from Huntington Ingalls will provide additional marine expertise to the project which will hopefully create more opportunities and exciting developments.

In a statement, Darryl Davis, the president of Boeing Phantom Works said: "This partnership provides the Navy a cost-effective, low-risk path to meet the emergent needs that prompted the Navy's Advanced Undersea Prototyping program," and continued, "we are combining Boeing's preeminent maritime engineering team with our nation's leading shipbuilder and Navy technical services company to get operational vehicles to the Navy years ahead of the standard acquisition process."
