Building Britain's nuclear future: Hinkley Point jobs

Hinkley Point C sits at the heart of the UK’s nuclear new build programme. As the first new nuclear power station to be constructed in the UK in twenty years, Hinkley Point is expected to take 10 years to complete and will create over 25,000 new employment opportunities in the process.

With over a year’s worth of construction already completed, Hinkley Point C is being built next to the two existing facilities, A and B, and is currently the biggest construction site in Europe.

As you can see from the incredible drone footage below, the construction site is truly vast with thousands of technical and engineering professionals working around the clock to make Hinkley Point C a reality.

The people building Hinkley Point C

At this stage of development, Hinkley Point C is especially utilising the skills of civil engineers, CAD specialists, and Piping Engineers. All roles that we here at Fircroft are currently recruiting for.

Let’s take a closer look at each of those jobs and the role that they are playing in Hinkley’s construction:

Civil Works Engineer

It’s the job of the civil works engineers to oversee the production and monitoring of the civil engineering of the buildings on the nuclear island. Apply now.

Piping CAD Designer

The Piping CAD Designers are responsible for the detailed design of the pipes used throughout Hinkley Point C (as well as electrical or HVAC supports). Apply now.

Piping Calculation Engineer

At Hinkley, it’s the responsibility of the Piping Calculation Engineers for the flexibility analysis of piping networks. Calculating new piping networks, as well as configuring the adaption of existing networks plays a vital role in Hinkley’s development. Apply now.

Civil Works CAD Engineer

With Hinkley’s construction still at the early stages, Civil Works CAD Engineers are employed to review the reinforcement drawings and 3D reinforcement models produced by the Civil Works Designers for many of the buildings being constructed as part of the site. Apply now.

Above are just a few of the many types of disciplines that are currently engaged in the development and construction of Hinkley Point C. At present, there are over 3,000 workers on site every day, and there are new employment opportunities arising all the time.

Be part of a record-breaking nuclear project

Hinkley Point C truly is unlike any other project on earth at present. Here’s a few of the stand-out facts and features of the project:
  • When completed, Hinkley Point C will be able to generate enough energy for approximately 5.8 million homes. The planned twin unit UK EPR (European Pressurised Reactor) will be capable of generating 3,260MW of secure, low-carbon electricity for 60 years.

  • Over 3 million tonnes of concrete will be used on the site- 75 times the quantity used to build the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

  • Over 4 million cubic metres of earth of have been excavated from the site- enough to fill Wembley Stadium.

  • Once completed, the power station will be the most expensive man-made object on Earth at an estimated cost of £19.6 billion.
