Chevron starts up Gorgon CO2 injection and storage project

Chevron have announced the startup and operation of a carbon dioxide injection system at their Gorgon natural gas facility located on Barrow Island, off Australia’s northwest coast.

According to Chevron Australia’s managing director, Al Williams, the project is “one of the world’s largest greenhouse gas mitigation projects ever undertaken by industry.”

The system will inject and store excess CO2 from the Gorgon field in a deep reservoir unit, known as the Dupuy Formation, more than 2km beneath Barrow Island.

Once fully operational, Chevron say it will reduce the Gorgon projects greenhouse gas emissions by around 40% - totalling more than 100 million tonnes over the life of the project.

Excess CO2 is produced due to the levels of naturally occurring reservoir carbon dioxide in the Gorgon field - accounting for approximately 14% of the gas located there. During the liquefaction process, where natural gas is cooled to -162℃, if the gas retains this level of CO2 it would freeze to a solid. In order to process it, then, the reservoir CO2 is separated from the natural gas stream before liquefaction.

This latest project launch will safely store that leftover CO2, so it is not emitted into the atmosphere. 

Following delays caused by Chevron’s discovery of problems with valves and pipeline equipment during commissioning, the system began operations on Thursday 8th August 2019. 

“This achievement is the result of strong collaboration across industry and governments and supports our objective of providing affordable, reliable and ever-cleaner energy essential to our modern lives,” said Williams.

“We are monitoring system performance and plan to safely ramp up injection volumes over the coming months as we bring online processing facilities.”
