Chevy and Shell to offer in-car fuel payments

Say goodbye to that long walk from your car to the fuel station payment window…

Chevrolet and Shell are rolling out in-car fuel payments, via an embedded, in-dash payment system. This new feature will allow drivers of certain Chevrolet vehicles to pay for their fuel directly through the touchscreen in their vehicle when they fill up at Shell fuel stations.

The payment system works via the Chevrolet Marketplace app. Simply touch the Shell icon and you’ll be given a code which will allow you to activate the fuel pump and start filling your vehicle. Payment is then deducted from your bank account (or whichever payment method you’ve connected to the Marketplace app).

Marketplace is the automotive industry’s first commerce platform for on-demand reservations and purchases of goods and services. Not only can you pay for your fuel in-car, but also order food, make dinner reservations, and find parking or hotels.

“We introduced Marketplace to deliver value, productivity and convenience for our customers,” said Rick Ruskin, Senior Manager, Online Commerce, Chevrolet. “Bringing the Shell Pay & Save functionality right on the touchscreen of our vehicles is the latest advancement of this platform, allowing drivers to simply access Fuel Rewards and pay for gas while inside their car.”

The app is available in all 2017 or newer Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles, but the in-dash fuel system is currently only available for Chevrolet vehicles. It will be rolled out to other General Motors vehicles later in the year. It is estimated that by the end of 2018 more than 4 million vehicles will have the in-dash fuelling option.

The technology is currently being trialled in Detroit, Seattle and Houston, but will be rolled out to cover more than 14,000 Shell stations across the US by the end of 2018.

“Being the first to deliver this type of in-dash fuel payment and savings is very exciting,” said Sydney Kimball, Vice President, Fuel Sales and Marketing Americas for Shell. “At Shell we are constantly working to develop better products and services for our customers, and we are always evolving according to their transforming needs and expectations around convenience, quality, digitalisation and service. We’re thrilled to be working with Chevrolet to make this a reality.”
