Could South Africa be about to experience an oil drilling boom?

Last week, French oil major Total announced that it had made what amounted to South Africa’s first deep-water discovery, finding significant reserves of gas condensate at the Brulpadda prospect around 175 kilometres off the southern coast of South Africa. The question is, could this be the first of many similar discoveries for South Africa?
The Brulpadda find has been hailed as 'transformational' for South Africa's economy.
The Brulpadda find, estimated at about 1Bbbl by Total CEO Patrick Pouyanne, is major boost for South Africa’s struggling economy which has been perpetually short of oil, and has a limited domestic supply of natural gas. It’s estimated that the Brulpadda find alone could be enough to supply South Africa’s refineries for almost four years. Oil industry consultancy Wood Mackenzie estimates that the discovery could be about three times the size of all of South Africa’s gas finds to date.

With gas and oil much sought-after by the country’s industries, it is expected that exploration and drilling activity off the coast of South Africa will now ramp up. The Ramaphoas-led South African government is already in the process of introducing legislation aimed at spurring exploration activity.

Total now plans to acquire 3D seismic data before drilling as many as four more exploration wells in an attempt to uncover more reserves.

Commenting on these plans, Kevin McLachlan, Senior Vice President Exploration at Total, said:

“We are very pleased to announce the Brulpadda discovery which was drilled in a challenging Deepwater environment. With this discovery, Total has opened a new world-class gas and oil play and is well positioned to test several follow-on prospects on the same block”.

Total has warned however, that the area is a challenging one to operate in, with ‘huge waves, the weather isn’t easy’ according to Pouyanne. Nevertheless, if the area holds as many potential reserves as anticipated, there won’t be any shortage of companies willing to tough out the conditions on the chance of making an epic discovery.

Across Africa as a whole, there has been an increase in drilling, with oil and gas rigs around the continent topping 100 in recent months according to data from Baker Hughes.

With huge potential discoveries to be made, it looks likely that South Africa will experience a drilling boom over the course of 2019.
