German automotive engineering company EDAG has this week unveiled a new scalable floor assembly platform which could have a significant impact upon the manufacturing of future middle and upper-class electric vehicles.

The platform, which has been named ‘SCALEbase’, provides a flexible solution for electric vehicle floor assembly. The only thing that is predefined in the SCALEbase is the distance between the front wheel and the heel point. This makes the platform an ideal basis for manufacturers.

The flexible nature of the SCALEbase platform means that time, local concept, dimensioning, design and factory planning requirements can all be taken into account, meaning it could possible for manufacturers to cut at least three to four months off the development period of a new EV model and significantly reduce their budget.

EDAG has also placed a significant focus on ensuring the SCALEbase technique is suitable for international use, meeting current and future crash requirements from a large number of markets. Should a crash occur, SCALEbase has optimised load paths to meet the ambitious requirements for the protection of passengers and the battery in the event of a side collision.

Commenting on the benefits of the SCALEbase platform, Micheal Schafer, technical project leader at EDAG said:
“In projects where it has been used, the SCALEbase platform has already demonstrated the fact that it offers customers added value. Immediately after the concept phase, development work was begun on a vehicle for a new manufacturer. This is evidence of the enormous potential of the system.”

Martin Hillebrecht, Head of the EDAG Competence Center, said:

“Considering how fast the technology or electrically powered vehicles is developing and the time and cost pressures that startup OEMS, in particular, are under, we offer a valuable time advantage.

EDAG has targeted both established manufacturers and start-ups as target customers for its new SCALEbase EV floor assembly platform.
