E.ON to provide all British customers with 100% renewable electricity

Energy company E.ON has announced that all its electricity supplied to residential customers throughout Britain will now come from 100% renewable sources.

According to the company, this will cover 3.3 million homes in the UK on all tariffs at no extra cost.

This is the largest utility switch in the UK so far - though both Shell Energy and Bulb claim to deliver 100% carbon-free electricity, they both have a much smaller customer base.

“Climate change is the defining issue of our era, and one that energy customers are increasingly concerned about,” said E.ON UK Chief Executive Michael Lewis.

“We believe large-scale action can make significant change possible and we’re committed to playing a leading role and setting an example for others to follow, that’s why we’re providing all of our residential customers with 100% renewable electricity as standard – a change at a scale never seen before in Britain.

“Our announcement is an important first step in a journey towards a more sustainable and personalised energy system, but the future of energy doesn’t stop here. The opportunities include helping all of our customers to better manage their energy through smart, personalised and sustainable technologies.”

The energy comes from a mix of offshore and onshore wind farms, biomass and solar sources. E.ON say that they directly supply a large proportion of this through their own renewable generation fleet, as well as agreements with independent wind generators around the country.

The decision was made following a YouGov survey of electricity customers which showed that 61% of Britons not already on a renewable tariff would be likely to change to a renewable energy supplier if it was at a reasonable price.
