ExxonMobil announces £140m investment at Fife ethylene plant

ExxonMobil has confirmed that it intends to invest £140m over the next two years at its Fife ethylene plant to upgrade key infrastructure and introduce new technologies that will significantly improve operational reliability and performance.

Of the £140 million investment a portion will be allocated for technologies that reduce the impact of flaring, including a state-of-the-art flare tip, which will reduce noise and vibration. The upgrade work is expected to support approximately 850 local construction jobs and benefit 40 local suppliers.

Commenting on the investment, Jacob McAlister, plant manager at the Fife ethylene plant, said:

“These planned investments demonstrate our commitment to long-term reliable operations at the site. While already one of the most modern plants of its kind in Europe, we are always looking for ways to improve reliability and efficiency through continued maintenance and investment in new technologies. Fife has a long-term future as a competitive asset, contributing to both the local and national economies.”

New Multi-Year Maintenance Contract

It has also emerged this week that ExxonMobil has agreed a new multi-year maintenance contract with Bilfinger UK for its Fife plant.

It is estimated that the multi-million pound contract – part of ExxonMobil’s £20m annual maintenance spend at the facility – will see Bilfinger UK deploy up to 100,000 man-hours annually on inspection programmes as well as mechanical, process and infrastructure maintenance.

Bilfinger UK, which has a base in Grangemouth, has taken over from the incumbent provider with around 55 personnel transferring under TUPE arrangements.

The Fife contract extends the existing relationship between ExxonMobil and Bilfinger UK, which also provides specialist services to the ExxonMobil facility in Fawley, Hampshire.

Exxon’s Fife ethylene plant first began operations in 1985 and has a production capacity of over 800,000 tonnes of ethylene per year. Over the last 30 years, it has been a major employer in the area, currently employing over 270 employees and core contractors, with more than 60 percent living within 10 miles of the plant.
