Reports indicate that ExxonMobil is close to signing a deal to explore for oil and gas offshore Mauritania, in what would be the company’s first major foray into the West African region.
Interest in the region is growing following discoveries by Cairn Energy and Kosmos Energy, both of which are now partnered with BP to develop projects.

France’s Total has also expressed an interest in pursuing exploration and production activity offshore Senegal and Mauritania and has bought into several exploration licences in both countries.

Experts and industry commentators have described the deep waters off the coast of West Africa as the next major frontier for energy drilling. At present, specialist firms are conducting seismic tests throughout the waters in an attempt to determine the true scale of the deposits.

It’s looking likely that Senegal and Mauritania could be a hotspot for oil and gas jobs in 2018. Next year, expect to see BP make a final investment decision on a liquefied natural gas (LNG) project that would ship West African gas worldwide.

Looking beyond Senegal and Mauritania, neighbouring countries south of the deposits such as Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and Guinea are gearing up to coax oil and gas operating companies to operate within their territories.
