ExxonMobil has announced the completion of an expansion at its speciality elastomers manufacturing plant in Newport, Wales.

The expansion will double the plant’s manufacturing capacity and increase global manufacturing capacity of Santoprene™ thermoplastic elastomers by 25%.

The project supported 130 jobs during construction and will create a further 35 full time production jobs.

Santoprene™ is a vulcanised rubber-like thermoplastic elastomer that can be processed and recycled within the manufacturing process. It’s used as a polymer for flexible engineered parts that require long-term performance and is used in industries as wide ranging as automotive, electrical, household appliances, construction and healthcare.

The benefits of using them over traditional vulcanised rubber materials are the ability to re-use and re-engineer the polymer, leading to reduced shipping wastes, improved recycling capabilities and more sustainable manufacturing.

“ExxonMobil’s high-performance plastics help make automotive and consumer products lighter, resulting in improved fuel efficiency and higher performance, compared with products made with traditional materials,” said Karen McKee, president of ExxonMobil Chemical Company.

“This Newport investment doubles the site’s manufacturing capacity of higher-value products.”

The company are also planning another UK expansion, with their Fawley refinery set to increase production of ultra-low sulfur diesel by 45% - or 38,000 barrels per day.
