Finland to eliminate coal use by 2030

Riku Huttunen, director general of Finland’s energy department, announced this week that the government intends to introduce legislation next year that will see the country phase out coal as an energy source by 2030.

The policy will retain a degree of flexibility and ‘room for manoeuvre’ according to Huttunen. Coal produces around 10 per cent of Finland’s energy (about 4.1 million tons of oil equivalent was burned in 2016), and is more flexible than other energy sources. As a result, the transition to alternative energy sources is expected to be gradual in order to keep the country’s power system stable.

As part of this strategy Finland is constructing two new nuclear reactors. Olkiluoto 3 and Hanhikivi 1, are due to go online in 2018 and 2024, respectively.
Despite this, instability in the power supply could nevertheless occur in the short term, as Sweden- with whom Norway has an interconnected energy grid- has plans to phase out two nuclear reactors.

To bolster carbon reduction efforts further still, Finland is also set to vote on a carbon tax increase in 2018.
