The giant Tortue field off the coast of West Africa holds much promise with industry analysts talking about vast reserves of oil and gas waiting to be exploited (Kosmos Energy estimate that the resources within the Greater Tortue Complex could be more than 25 trillion cubic feet of gas along with concomitant amounts of oil). Well, Tortue now appears to be yielding results with BW Offshore announcing that they have achieved first oil from the field this week.
First oil was achieved at Tortue by BW Offshore's FPSO the BW Adolo.

BW’s FPSO, the BW Adolo was responsible for achieving first oil, having arrived off the coast of Gabon in late July, with the hook up of mooring systems and installation of risers and umbilicals completed in early September.

The BW Adolo is a converted VLCC with a production capacity of 40,000 barrels of oil per day. The vessel has undergone an increased life extension scope enabling an extended production profile on the back of positive reserve developments.

Commenting on the development BW Offshore’s CEO, Carl K. Arnet, said:

“We have achieved first oil from the Dussafu licence within budget and on schedule. The execution of the Dussafu project confirms the attractiveness of our model by combining proven resources, a resourceful organisation and access to production assets to achieve short time-to-oil”.

“Our first priority now is to complete start-up activities and stabilise production on BW Adolo. We will at the same time work towards the final investment decision on Tortue Phase 2, which will unlock additional production volumes, and continue the appraisal program of the recently announced discovery at Ruche NE as well as to confirm additional resources and strengthen the commerciality of the Dussafu license”.

Tortue has much much more to yield. The years ahead look exciting from a production perspective and it’s certain that the whole area will be a major boon for the international oil and gas jobs market.

As Bernard Looney, Chief Executive Upstream at BP, said in a recent speech about Tortue:

“It is precisely the kind of gas province that we want to invest in. It is long-term. It is large-scale. And it is highly competitive”.
