Five Minutes with Fircroft: Cumbria

18/02/2015
Gillian Gill, Fircroft’s Business Manager in Whitehaven, discusses our Cumbrian office and the nuclear industry in the region.

Our Office at Westlakes

The Fircroft Cumbria office opened in 1999 and was set up specifically to service a five-year contract award to source agency supplied workers to the Sellafield nuclear site in Cumbria. The office is situated in Ingwell Hall on the Westlakes Science & Technology Park, where many of our nuclear clients have also chosen to open up offices to be in close proximity of the Sellafield site. Conveniently, Sellafield is only 8 miles south of where we are situated at the technology park.

We expanded the office in July 2013 into additional space next door and gave it a complete makeover! The transformation included incorporating the Fircroft company colours into the décor, forming a professional and modern image. We now have a conference room with video conferencing facilities; this is mainly used for client meetings and interviews, as well as internal meetings and business needs.

Our client portfolio has grown significantly over the past 16 years; we put this down to Fircroft’s excellent reputation, as well as our business-wide professional services that we provide for our clients. In particular, we have experienced a local increase in demand for permanent recruitment with many our clients over the last 12 months, and hope to develop this division further in 2015 and 2016. Our client base is predominantly made up of three industry sectors – nuclear, renewable energy and gas production/storage. The local area presents many opportunities for Fircroft Cumbria, primarily with the option to grow the existing team and secure further nuclear business due to recent contract awards.

Meet the Team

In early 2008, the initial growth plan began for the Cumbria office; as a result, a Recruitment Manager, Recruitment Consultant and Administrator joined the existing team. Today Fircroft Cumbria has approximately 200 Contractors and five staff, having steadily grown over a seven year period.

The recruitment team has an excellent knowledge and understanding of the industry sectors we work with, enabling us to meet individual client needs. We have formed excellent relationships with our clients over the years, which has resulted in numerous other business opportunities through recommendations from both clients and candidates.

The Past and Future of West Cumbria

West Cumbria is bordered by the beautiful Lake District in the East and the Solway Firth and East Irish Sea to the West. Historically the area was rich from iron ore and coal, meaning that the majority of jobs were created in the steel, rail and mining industries. We have seen the opening and closing of Marchon, a local chemical factory, but more recently the nuclear industry is by far the most predominant employer in the area due to the Sellafield nuclear facility.

Looking to the future, we have a nuclear new build planned on our doorstep at Sellafield “Moorside Power Station”, which will create over 21,000 jobs during its construction and operation phases. In addition to this, many renewable and clean energy companies have become interested in relocating to the region, therefore we anticipate a substantial growth in this sector which will ultimately make West Cumbria “Britain’s Energy Coast”.
