Five Minutes with Fircroft: Teesside

19/01/2015
Dorothy Tiley, Business Manager at our Teesside office, discusses her role there and the oil and gas and power and energy industries in the region.

How long have you worked in the oil and gas industry?

Prior to working at Fircroft, I worked for a commercial recruitment agency and developed a lot of experience in the industry. I joined Fircroft in 2001 as I had developed relationships within the business in my previous role; we had been joint suppliers for a large client. Fircroft appealed to me as it is a global organisation, and I knew how challenging it would be to recruit for engineering personnel whilst developing the business in further regions.

I have lived and worked in Teesside for the majority of my life, so working in the office here is ideal. Teesside is a very close knit community and a lot of my friends are either client contacts or contractors, so I enjoy working here very much.

How does the Teesside office operate?

There are currently 25 people working in the Teesside and Hartlepool on-site office; this consists of Regional Director, the Regional Manager, Business Manager (myself!), Recruitment Managers, Account Managers, Senior Recruitment Consultants, Recruitment Consultants, Resourcers, Account Coordinators and an Administrator. As Business Manager, I am responsible for ensuring teams are working towards all KPIs and targets, as well as developing and sourcing clients for business opportunities. My role at Fircroft also includes account management of key clients and recruitment of internal staff.

The majority of our clients are local, and as a result we have regular meetings with them – similarly with contractors, we always aim to see the contractor before they start work. One of our Unit KPIs is to meet all contractors during their first month of working via Fircroft, which involves going to site to visit them and ensure they are settling in. We also have the on-site team in Hartlepool with one of our largest clients here in Teesside to ensure all our contractors are fully supported on a daily basis.

The Fircroft Teesside office has been open since 1996, and the oil and gas industry here is controlled by the commodity; in many instances, integrated chemical producers of the Northeast of England Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC). These companies are based on three large chemical sites around the mouth of the River Tees at Wilton, Billingham and Seal Sands. They make products such as petrochemicals, commodity chemicals, fertilizers and polymers. Teesside also houses two large fabrication yards and a number of energy from waste plants. As a result, the Fircroft Teesside office is constantly busy, as we are located central to our clients on the Belasis Hall Technology Park in Billingham.

What does the future hold for the industry in Teesside?

Teesside is home to the largest integrated chemical complex in the UK and the second largest in Western Europe. Numerous types of base chemicals are produced in the region that go into the manufacture of plastic goods, fertilisers and pharmaceuticals. The area is a hub for the petrochemicals, energy and manufacturing industries.

Teesside is at the forefront across all sectors, supplying offshore wind projects in the North Sea, creating a cluster of biomass and biofuels plants, and supporting the development of major international businesses based in the area. Teesside now leads the UK in low carbon economic growth through securing jobs, bringing in investment and developing the region’s long-term prosperity.

On average, Teesside currently contributes over £10bn to the national economy every year; 62% of large Tees Valley businesses are foreign owned and have recently invested over £750 million between 2009 and 2012, making the Tees Valley extremely attractive to foreign labour. North East exports recently reached a record high with goods worth £13.5bn sold overseas. With the energy industries in Teesside continuing to develop, it is an exciting time for all involved, from the perspective of both clients and candidates.
