Ford announces big investments in electrification

It was announced at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show on Sunday that Ford will launch 40 electrified models by 2022. Chairman Bill Ford said that they will invest $11 billion in electrification and of the total 40 models, 16 of them will be all-electric, with the remaining 24 being plug-in hybrids.

The investment and the number of models they are going to release represents Ford’s increased dedication to electrification. Their previous goals included investing $4.5 billion and launching 12 electrified models by 2020. Along with the previous figures, nearly all of the new models announced by Ford were hybrids, with the exception of an all-electric SUV with a 300-mile range. The recent announcement paints a very different picture.

The SUV is expected to be called Mach 1, which is named after the Mustang performance model. It is presumed that all of Ford’s other electric cars will be developed by Team Edison, which is a dedicated electric-car team formed by Ford last year.

The only electric vehicle that Ford currently produce is the Focus Electric, which, in terms of technology, is still lagging behind its competitors. Therefore, Ford will need to build a line-up of electric cars from scratch.

The competition is going to be fierce as many automakers are planning to develop an electric version of every car in their current line-up – and more. It is speculated that the increased interest in electric vehicles is due to the likelihood of stricter emissions standards in the near future. It is believed that several European countries are in discussions regarding banning the sale of new gasoline and diesel cars.

Additionally, Ford has already teamed up with automaker Zotye Auto to develop electric cars for the Chinese market.
