An area of Sydney Harbour which is currently being used as a dry dock by the Australian Navy, could become a cultural, leisure and community destination in plans being drawn up by an Australian architectural firm.

The area, called Garden Island, is set to become available in the near future as the Navy plans to decommission its operations there.

With this opportunity at hand, local non-profit company Urban TaskForce commissioned architectural firm LAVA to explore future uses for the area and render what this could look like.
Among the proposed uses for the area of the headland are housing, floating markets, harbour baths, theatre performances and boat shows.

It is hoped that the new development will help to accommodate Sydney's growing population.

Urban TaskForce CEO, Chris Johnson, commented on the proposed development:

“The evolution of Garden Island would follow a trend for Sydney Harbour where heavy shipping uses relocate to Botany Bay and new resort style development is planned to help accommodate Sydney’s growing population. Barangaroo is an example of this  revitalisation where container shipping uses were relocated to Port Kembla and the site was redeveloped with commercial, retail and residential buildings. In a similar manner to Barangaroo the northern part of the site at Garden Island would remain as parkland. Another example of the revitalisation of sites on Sydney Harbour is the Bays Precinct where most shipping uses have now relocated and redevelopment options are being proposed.”

As you’ll probably agree, the renderings present an appealing vision for a revitalised Sydney Harbour.
