Geely Auto has announced the investment of 370 million RMB ($52.86 million) for the development of “healthy, intelligent vehicles”.

The company has already delivered the first stage, just 20 days after the investment was proposed, with the introduction of a G-Clean Intelligent Air Purification System (IAPS), which is able to automatically filter out harmful particulates from the internal air environment. Geely Auto have already announced that all of its future vehicles from March 2020 onwards will be equipped with the G-Clean IAPS.

Geely’s global R&D network encompasses an industry-leading team based in a newly opened facility in Frankfurt, Germany as well as development and design departments across Europe, the USA and China. Together are working with professional medical and scientific research institutions to set up special project teams to achieve their goals.

The company say that these teams will “jointly move to develop new environmentally sustainable materials with anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties which can be used within air-conditioner systems and on frequently touched surfaces such as buttons and handles”.

Geely want the anti-viral “healthier car” technology to be available for all consumers, not just specialised medical vehicles. Comprehensive virus protection involves the capability to isolate harmful substances and quickly and effectively purify cabin air.

The IAPS system uses an advanced active carbon chemical filter that can effectively absorb harmful gases and can filter out irritating odor and harmful pollutants that are detected by an automatic system. A negative ion generator is also used to sterilize and deodorize vehicle pollutants and remove airbone viruses, bacteria, fungi and molds, achieving the same level of air filter as an N95 respiration system.

150 Geely Jiaji MPVs have been equipped with the system and given to frontline workers battling Coronavirus in China.

“Epidemic prevention is a job that requires the long-term effort of wider society. As the most common mode of transportation, consumers spend a considerable amount time in their cars, akin to a “second home” Only by making healthier products can we meet consumer demand for better quality of life. Based on the automotive industry’s development direction built around electrified, connectivity, intelligence, and shared mobility, auto companies should commit to developing products that help protect the health of drivers and passengers. This will become one of Geely Auto key long-term development objectives,” said An Conghui, President of Geely Holding Group and President and CEO of Geely Auto Group.

The announcement follows Geely’s agreement from January with the Li Shufu Foundation to set up a 200 million RMB ($28.58 million) fund to support the prevention and control of the Coronavirus epidemic, including mass purchasing of medical supplies for the affected areas across China.
