General Motors has recently launched an exciting new feature whereby drivers can make purchases from their connected vehicle. The new commerce system is called ‘Marketplace’ and allows drivers to make purchases such as ordering coffee and performing actions like making a dinner reservation. The new feature means that you can perform such tasks without having to touch a mobile phone, increasing safety whilst driving.

GM has collaborated with a number of companies such as Starbucks, TGI Fridays and Shell to develop this feature so that drivers can be even more connected to the world through their vehicles.

It is believed that an average of 1.9 million vehicles purchased throughout 2017 will be automatically upgraded to receive the Marketplace feature upon its release. Therefore, it is estimated that by the end of 2018, GM will have 4 million vehicles equipped with this new feature on the road.

Similarly, other connected car features include receiving map updates, traffic information and online music; Marketplace works by using a cellular service over the 4G LTE networks.

The concern that has been highlighted is that of a data protection issue and whether auto manufacturers could use drivers driving habits to cross-sell products. However, GM’s Director of Communications has stated that no financial information will be stored on the vehicle and that participating merchants must have the customer’s consent before accessing any data, which is reflected in their terms and conditions.

The focus on infotainment systems within the Automotive industry means that manufacturers are now recruiting for different skillsets than we have previously seen. An increase in the number of electronics and ICT centred roles is most certainly on the horizon.
