Germany to build an electric highway

Engineering firm Siemens has been commissioned by the German state of Hesse to construct a 10km long ‘eHighway’.

The eHighway consists of overhead electrified wires that trucks can connect to at speed with a pantograph.

Running between the Zeppelinheim interchange at Frankfurt Airport and the Darmstad interchange, Siemens’ eHighway will be installed on the A5 federal autobahn.

Siemens claims that its eHighway system will reduce the use of fossil fuels and make renewable energy more readily available for transport purposes, as well as eliminating local pollution emissions such as CO2 and nitrogen oxides.

Additionally, Siemens claims that the electrified lines will generate major cost savings for transport and logistics operators, stating that a 40-ton truck running for 100,000km on an eHighway would realise €200,000 in reduced fuel costs.

Commenting on the project Roland Edel, Chief Technology Officer of the Siemens Mobility Division, said:

“With the eHighway. We’ve created an economically viable solution for climate-neutral freight transport by road. Our technology is an already existing and feasible alternative to trucks operating with internal combustion engines.”

The core element of the system is an intelligent pantograph situated on the trucks which enables them to connect with the overhead wires at speeds of up to 90km/h.

Set to be commissioned at the end of 2018, if Siemens’ eHighway project proves to be a commercial success it could mark yet another successful step towards carbon-neutral road transport.
