Ghana’s Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has announced that $4.5 million has been secured from Aker Energy for the Accelerated Oil and Gas Capacity (AOGC) Programme, that will guide 200 Ghanaians into skilled upstream jobs.

The Programme was initially launched by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in November 2017, following a manifesto promise to create more opportunities in the upstream sector.

The one-year training programme is due to start in January, with the final participant expected to complete the course by December 2019.

The aims of the project are to develop the capacity of local workers in core technical areas - including welding, metal fabrication and pipe fitting - and developing non-destructive test technicians, drilling engineers and mechanical technicians. Participants will, at the same time, acquire Basic Offshore Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET), to facilitate their smooth transition into the upstream petroleum sector as qualified technicians.

“This will add a further 200 skilled workers to the upstream industry and ensure that increasingly more of the jobs in the upstream sector are now done by Ghanaians,” said Oppong Nkrumah.

Expansion of the training programme will also develop the capacity of Ghanaian technical and vocational institutions as well as universities to offer world class training and certifications for the Oil & Gas industry.

Ghana’s Oil & Gas industry is expanding rapidly, with local employment in the sector thought to have risen by 174% between 2013 and 2018, totalling 13,000 people.

Following Aker Energy’s contribution to the programme, acting Chief Executive of the Petroleum Commision Egbert Faibille Jnr is looking to other sources to meet their commitment: “I know Baker Hughes and GE are also lining up to announce its contribution soon, likewise a few others.”

The government continues to plan further investments in driving relevant skills to its youth.
