Honda's Mean Mower aims for 150mph (and a World Record)

How fast can you mow your lawn? If you were to get your hands on Honda’s latest ‘mean mower’ you’d be able to mow it at 150mph! In an attempt to reclaim the crown for the world’s fastest lawn mower, Honda has unveiled a frankly monstrous garden implement…
Despite its impressive performance Honda's Mean Mower V2 still retains the visual look of a traditional sit-on lawn tractor.

Built by Team Dynamics, Honda’s British Touring Car Championship partner and the team behind the original Mean Mower that took the record for the world’s fastest lawn mower in 2014 (it reached just over 116mph), the Mean Mower V2 takes things up a notch. Now using CAD design, more bespoke parts, advanced materials, and 3D printing, it packs almost double the power of the original, with the development team estimating it is capable of more than 150mph.

Despite all of the unique development, Honda’s Mean Mower V2 still visually resembles a traditional sit-on lawn mower- the Honda HF 2622 lawn tractor- to be precise. As well as retaining its front cowl, grass box and body panels, the Mean Mower V2 can also still cut grass.
With a 150mph top speed, the Mean Mower V2 still has the ability to mow grass!

Turn the ignition and you’ll hear the growl of a 999cc four-cylinder Fireblade engine. Yes, the very same as that found in Honda’s top superbikes. This particular one produces more than 190bhp at 13,000rpm. And, with a super-light frame and engine dry weight of just 69.1kg the Team Dynamics engineers predict an eye-watering power to weight ratio of 1000bhp/tonne.
The Mean Mower V2 does, however, make use of some custom performance parts to help it achieve its impressive top speed.

With all of that power at your disposal you’re going to want some decent anchors, and Team Dynamics has obliged, fitting four-piston brake callipers to the front and six to the rear- all of which are vented to increase airflow and reduce weight. These brakes sit on goldspeed ten-inch ATV wheels anodised in gold to match that of the Fireblade, whilst they are shod with special-order Hoosier racing tyres for exceptional grip.

The Mean Mower V2 also adopts some further Fireblade DNA by making use of several other parts of Honda’s iconic superbike including the clutch, ECU, six-speed drive train and full colour LCD display. The programmable quick shift gear system promises precise and responsive shift through carbon paddles on the steering wheel – with the team estimating that the mower could reach 90mph in first gear.

With all of that performance under the hood, Honda have enlisted the skills of a professional racer to help break the speed record. Enter 23-year old Jess Hawkins, an experienced kart and car racer.

“The original Mean Mower was a great challenge for us and the result was an amazing machine. This time we have moved the game on considerably to build an incredible piece of real engineering, using advanced design and production techniques and calling upon some very clever thinking to bring the performance and power but still retain the look of the production mower. We’re in testing phase now and everything is looking good, with a top speed of more than 150mph very much in our sights,” says Dave Hodgetts, Managing Director, Honda UK.

Let’s hope Dave is correct! Who wouldn’t want to see a lawn mower do 150mph after all?
