Hundreds of new jobs at Isle of Wight wind turbine factory

Wind turbine manufacturers MHI Vesta have announced that they will be creating hundreds of new jobs through a massive expansion of their factory, based on the Isle of Wight.

The demand for offshore wind farms means MHI Vestas have to expand

MHI Vestas Offshore Wind designs, manufactures, installs and services offshore wind turbines, most significantly the V164 - one of the world’s most powerful turbines. A single turn of its 80m blades can create enough energy to power an average UK home for 29 hours. The factory is jointly owned by the Vestas Wind Systems and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

Currently 300 people are employed at the factory, which was opened in 2011, but the company say that growing demand for offshore wind turbines mean they need to expand.

Production director, James Luter, said: “Today marks the start of an ambitious programme to increase the capacity of our blade production facility at the West Medina Mills on the Isle of Wight. We are looking for people with the right attitude, a good work ethic, and who want to be part of something historic.”

Island MP Bob Seely commented: “Their ambitious programme to recruit hundreds of skilled, long term roles over the next few months confirms the island’s pivotal role within the wider Solent region, which is fast becoming a hub for the world’s offshore wind turbine industry.”
