Hyundai grapples with radical new design ideas with its Grappler ATC concept

Hyundai. The very name conjures up images of sensible, compact cars that are ideal for city streets or short runs across the suburbs. But clearly someone at Hyundai is keen to shake off this mundane image and inject a bit more excitement into the brand, as evidenced by the frankly outrageous looking ‘Grappler’ ATC concept car which the South Korean automotive giant revealed at the 2019 SEMA show this week.

As anyone who has even a passing interest in cars will be aware, SUVs and other offroad variants have become the model de jure of manufacturers in recent years and Hyundai is no exception. Except with the Grappler Hyundai is taking it up a notch. Think of it like an SUV on steroids.

That might sound like a hyperbolic description, but check out some of the features on this thing! According to a spokesperson, the Grappler concept ‘boasts increased ground clearance, combining superb approach and departure angles for confident off-roading capability, while custom front and rear brush guards were developed to ensure the Velostar Grappler is protected whenever the terrain turns unpredictable. Oversized all-terrain tires and rally-themed Method Racing wheels yield a menacing demeanour and functional capability, while Borla cat-back exhaust components add a visceral audible resonance.’

The inside of the Velostar Grappler is also packed with interesting and radical features. Pop the door and hop in and you’ll find yourself surrounded by an integrated roll bar as well as having multiple tools to hand. Tools? Yes, tools. A Goal Zero portable power station, an oversized utility shovel, roadside assistance kit, first aid kit, and Napier outdoor dome tent are just a few of the tools and pieces of equipment that you’ll have handy should the worst happen while you’re driving through the wilderness.

Hyundai certainly weren’t exaggerating when they described this thing as a ‘self-contained command centre with exceptional versatility’.

Whilst the mock-up picture above is all we’ve seen of the Velostar Grappler ATC so far, Hyundai have hinted that they may reveal a physical version in early November.
