Modelling languages are used in a wide variety of industries. Automotive, aerospace, medical device manufacturing and many others are all industries that offer multiple jobs for professionals with experience in simulation software such as Simulink, Matlab, C++, C# and Fortran and who are conversant in SYSML.

But did you know that professionals that are familiar with SYSML are now much sought after within the renewable energy industry?

One reason for this is because of something called HVDC; a ground-breaking technology that will make renewable energy a far more viable form of power generation.

What is HVDC?

To put it simply, HVDC makes power grids more flexible and better able to accommodate intermittent energy generation- namely renewable energy sources (think wind turbines, solar arrays etc).

Think of HVDC as a sort of electrical super-highway transporting large volumes of electricity over vast distances with very little loss.

Due to the innovative nature of HVDC solutions, new projects utilising this technology are springing-up across the globe and you can play an integral part in them.

At present, HVDC projects are underway in Africa, Australia and Oceania, Asia, Europe, North America and South America. The globe is embracing HVDC technology.
Not only that, but HVDC projects are increasing global-connectivity. National grids are becoming interconnected thanks to this technology.

There are two types of HVDC technologies: Line commutated converters (LCC), which encourage energy trading and HVDC transmission; and, voltage source converters (VSC), which enables renewable energy by connecting variable energy resources and DC grids. LCC is ideal for major bulk power projects, while VSC is better suited for more compact projects.

HVDC also several other features which make it an important element in any future renewable energy successes:

  • Increased energy efficiency: which will help operators meet growing electricity demand whilst also reducing transmission losses and land use (particularly useful for connecting offshore wind farms to onshore grids).

  • The ability to quickly change the direction of energy flow: which makes it easier for operators to connect wind, solar and other renewable sources across national borders.

  • The ability to connect AC grids to renewable sources: this will have the effect of improving power quality, stability and reliability on networks whilst also reducing disturbances.

  • Improved grid management: with HVDC central control centres can manage the network, keeping the grid balanced by injecting the necessary power when there is a dip or peak in demand.
