According to research undertaken by Ikea, around 1.1 billion people around the world still have little or no access to electricity. Since centralised energy networks are expensive to build, the furniture manufacturer are looking towards other solutions.

They created SolarVille.

SolarVille is a 1:50 scale model neighborhood built by Ikea and designed by Danish architect SachsNottveit. The miniature wooden village demonstrates how solar power combined with blockchain technology can create an energy self-sufficient community.

In their design, houses are fitted with solar panels and have the capability to sell or purchase excess energy with each other, creating a closed circuit microgrid.

Blockchain technology manages the transactions and regulates the storage system, allowing the houses to directly trade with each other.

The model demonstrates how the system would work in real time.

The technology is explained in Ikea’s report, called “A Brighter Tomorrow”, where they argue that clean energy can be available to all if we are able to capture just a small fraction of the energy that reaches Earth from the Sun.

SolarVille is being displayed at Copenhagen’s Space10 gallery until the end of March.
