With demand for air travel surging, the government of India has announced plans to spend upwards of $60bn on doubling the number of airports it operates.

Speaking to the Nikkei Asian Review, India’s minister for civil aviation said that “India should have 150 to 200 airports within the next 15 to 20 years.” Currently, India has 100 airports and has embarked upon a rapid construction programme with 31 new airports expected to be completed within the next year.

Demand is taking off

India’s strong economic growth (currently running at 7%) and an influx of budget airlines means that demand for air travel is increasing exponentially. Last year, the number of domestic passengers saw its 42nd straight month of double-digit growth. Such is the strength of demand that the International Air Transport Association has predicted that by 2025, India will have leapfrogged the UK to become the third largest market for aviation transport in the world, behind only China and the US.

Of the 100 new airports to be built, around 70 are expected to be constructed in areas that currently have no airport. The remainder will become secondary airports, as current airport hubs such as Mumbai and Chennai will soon be operating above their design capacity.
