INEOS has announced that it intends to build a ‘world-scale’, state of the art cumene unit in Marl, Germany, with the anticipated commissioning and start-up date of 2021.

The new 750,000 tonne unit will use existing pipeline connections between INEOS’ phenol and acetone production sites in Gladbeck, the Evonik Chemiepark in Marl and the BP refinery and cracker complex in Gelsenkirchen. Its location will optimise the efficiency of the plant by integrating raw materials from the refinery and cracker complex. The site also benefits from the Marl harbour waterway connection.

INEOS Phenol is currently the world’s largest producer of phenol and acetone and the largest consumer of cumene, which is an essential raw material. The commitment to building this new cumene unit will cement INEOS’ lead in this sector.

Commenting on the investment commitment, CEO of INEOS Phenol, Hans Casier, said:

“We are very pleased to be making this important feedstock investment in our European business. It shows a clear commitment by INEOS to its business, customers and suppliers. Our customers should be confident that we are investing in our business to meet their long-term business needs.”

Jorg Harren, Site Manager at Chemiepark Marl from Evonik, said:

“It is a great pleasure that the Chemiepark Marl will host this world-scale, state-of-the-art facility. The plant is of utmost importance for the Verbund structure of the entire chemical cluster of the northern Ruhr Area.”

This investment is one of many which INEOS has committed to in recent months including the expansion of its Chocolate Bayou facility south of Houston, USA and a new €3 billion ethane gas cracker and PDH unit in Antwerp.
