INEOS to produce Projekt Grenadier 4x4 vehicle in Bridgend

INEOS automotive have selected a site in Bridgend for the production of its upcoming 4x4 vehicle that’s intended to rival the Land Rover Defender.

The plans are expected to create around 200 new jobs initially, with the potential to increase that to 500 in the long term.

Projekt Grenadier is a concept spearheaded by INEOS CEO and Chairman, Jim Ratcliffe. As a 4x4 enthusiast, Ratcliffe sought to produce a spiritual successor to the Defender after Land Rover announced it would be discontinued in 2016.

The plans are to build “an uncompromising 4x4, a new-from-the-ground-up vehicle built on all-new architecture, inspired by the off-road originals, such as the Willys Jeep, Series 1 Land Rover and J40 Toyota Land Cruiser”.

INEOS Automotive have previously announced a powertrain technology partnership with BMW Group, who will supply the 4x4’s engines.

According to industry reports, the decision to produce the car in Bridgend - which was reportedly being considered alongside a location in Portugal - was made following talks with the Welsh and UK governments, with the Welsh Government understood to have committed millions of pounds to attract the company.

Currently the area is home to a manufacturing plant owned by Ford, but this facility is due to close in 2020. INEOS are thought to be developing their own site, rather than taking over Ford’s, though it should provide new opportunities for those who currently work in the area.
