Iqarus develops Covid-19 Medevac service for offshore workers

Iqarus, an international SOS company and healthcare provider with experience in supporting clients through global medical situations, has launched a new service for North Sea offshore workers potentially affected by Covid-19.

The company are basing their service around Aberdeen heliports, where they are able to support clients with the receipt, transfer and assessment of suspected cases of Covid-19. Their clinical team will assess if a worker is fit to travel and provide tailored advice in line with the latest Health Protection Scotland guidance.

They can provide clinically appropriate transports from Aberdeen heliports to a suitable healthcare provider.

“Until now, returning suspected or confirmed cases back to shore for treatment was a predicament. The wellbeing of others, and mitigation of infection spread is paramount to operations. Flying patients back brought with it concerns for pilots’ safety, whilst teams onshore have not been properly set up to deal with potentially high-risk cases,”
explained Dr Stuart Scott, Clinical Director, offshore topside and diving at Iqarus.

“This new service, further backed by the recently confirmed helicopter operators, means that we can assess those patients quickly with the best quality of care at the heart of it.”

The hope is to mitigate any risks and provide advice that will help companies safely continue operations while providing for the wellbeing of their staff.

The fully risk-assessed service is available on an opt-in for offshore companies, in line with HSE L123.

The service is of course a last resort for offshore workers who require it, with Iqarus stressing the need for all businesses to follow safe guidelines to prevent the spread.

“For offices, we recommend following the standard guidance for any business in terms of good hygiene and travel screening. It’s all about educating employees and keeping them informed. We all have a responsibility to protect the people who work for us and with us,” said Dr. Scott.
