Is construction becoming the career path of choice for gamers?

It certainly seems so according to reports from leading construction companies.

For many game design graduates, the construction industry is becoming an attractive proposition thanks to excellent rates of pay and remuneration and opportunities to apply their skills in an industry which is waking up to the potential of digital technology.

Hacking the construction industry

2D and 3D visualisation, VR, BIM (Building Information Modelling), and augmented reality are innovations that are increasingly being adopted by the construction industry during the conceptualisation, design and planning phases of major projects.

A particularly notable example of this new tech in action, is the development of a 4D visualisation tool by Walsh Group (a London headquarted structural and civil engineering firm). The 4D tool is a fully interactive animation package that can be viewed on desktops, laptops, tablets and mobiles on site.

As a result of the growth of tech into the industry, not only are game design graduates becoming sought after by the planning and design departments of large construction firms, but graduates are seeing the construction industry as an area in which they can forge new careers and make a meaningful difference with their skillsets.

Pecunia non olet

The old saying that ‘money doesn’t smell’ is truer than ever. With competition for graduate-level jobs incredibly intense, graduates are broadening their horizons when considering the types of industries in which they will work.

A motivating factor therefore for the migration of computer design talent into the construction industry is the levels of pay on offer. Research from Prospects, a graduate careers organisation, puts typical graduate starting salaries for artists / animators and programmers in games development  at around £19,000 to £25,000 whereas these same roles in the construction industry fetch between £23,000 to £28,000.

A changing talent pool for the construction industry

Considering the changing nature of work within the industry, and the need for different skillsets that this will bring, construction firms need to think about creating appropriate talent pipelines to secure the appropriate talent.

If the construction industry can make use of skillsets that it wouldn’t traditionally have considered hiring, then it can reap enormous benefits. And, as graduates see the industry adopting digital tech, we may see construction becoming the career path of choice for gamers…
