Japan to develop 30 offshore wind farms in next 10 years

The Japanese government has announced plans to create new rules and support infrastructure that will help them build offshore wind farms at 30 sites by 2031.

Beginning in April 2021, the new policy will aim to build three to four new projects each year. Each one is intended to have a total generation capacity of 1GW. Each plant usually takes five to ten years to build.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) plans to build nationwide storage facilities and reinforce several ports in order to manage the parts required for construction of the various sites. And the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) have plans to revise power grid rules that will scrap restrictions on green power suppliers.

Some ports are already reported to have begun construction work for the process.

The move is in line with Japan’s intention to transition to cleaner energy. It will also create hundreds of jobs over the next decade - though an estimation for how many jobs has yet to be announced.
