Las Vegas greenlights Elon Musk’s high-speed transport tunnel

The Boring Company, Elon Musk’s tunnel construction company, has been given approval by Las Vegas local authorities to build the company’s first commercial transportation service.

The project will involve construction of an underground transport loop beneath the Las Vegas Convention Center, where autonomous vehicles will transport passengers at high speeds.

Currently the Convention Center is undergoing a large renovation that will expand it over 200 acres. Travel from end-to-end is a two mile journey, so the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority have been seeking potential on-site transport solutions.

The Boring Company will construct the tunnel and design an electric “people mover” to operate within it, stopping at various stations within the center. Proposals show that they intend to transport up to 11,000 passengers per hour.

The company have also suggested that, if the project is successful, there will be potential to extend the tunnel system to incorporate the Las Vegas Strip, Las Vegas Stadium and McCarran International Airport.

The Boring Company will now work with the tourism authority to finalise the design and construction plans for approval in June 2019. The initial phase is expected to cost between $35 million and $55 million.

The aim is to have the tunnel up and running in time for the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show, although Elon Musk has already set his own target of having it operational by the end of the year.
