Lithium mining to come to the UK

Lithium is rapidly becoming one of the world’s most sought-after and valued commodities. In large, because of the vital role it plays in modern battery technology.

Now, a British mining company could be about to bring lithium mining to the UK thanks to a £1million investment from a group of highly experienced mining and natural resources investors.

Cornish Lithium intends to undertake exploration activities in Cornwall, England and collect data regarding the feasibility of underground and surface drilling and sampling. This follows Cornish Lithium securing the exploration rights with Strongbow Exploration and Mineral Exploration in January 2017.

The company hopes to rapidly find the best locations for lithium across the county.

Jeremy Wrathall, CEO of Cornish Lithium, explains:

“Cornish Lithium has been set up to explore the potential for a lithium industry in the UK; which would give the country significant strategic advantages in a world increasingly focused on zero emissions and renewable power.”

“We believe the potential benefits of developing a lithium industry in Cornwall will be significant for the county and the UK as a whole.”

Ken Liddell, one of the new investors, is confident that significant volumes of lithium can be found and harvested by the company:

“Given the extensive historic readings of lithium in geothermal brines as well as the recent advances in technology, we see a real potential for lithium production in Cornwall. Combined with the global shift in focus towards electric vehicles and battery energy storage we believe that Cornish Lithium could potentially become a very significant player in the lithium industry in the UK and Europe. We look forward to working with the team in progressing this exciting project through its exploration and development phases.”

Given the applications and value of lithium, the UK government has highlighted this strategic mineral as a metal of importance to UK industry.
