Picture the scene…

You’ve just finished another day of work in your well remunerated, rewarding job at a major global engineering firm. As you walk off site for the day your thoughts turn to an evening of fine food and drink enjoyed on a rooftop terrace in the heat of a Mediterranean climate. After that, you might be in the mood for an evening of cultural entertainment at a world-class event or stroll along the beach.

Well, you needn’t picture the scene any longer, for this lifestyle is available right now in Adelaide, Australia for engineering professionals with the right mix of skills and experience.
Consistently ranked as one of Australia’s ‘most liveable’ cities, Adelaide is noted for its many festivals and sporting events, its food and wine, long beachfronts, and its buoyant economy.

With many engineers thinking about making the move to Australia at present, we’ve decided to take a look at the top things to do in this gem of a city….

Explore historic Port Adelaide

The Port Adelaide district has a wealth of beautiful 19th century buildings, classic Australia pubs and atmospheric old wharves. The Maritime Museum on Lipson Street is worth a visit for those of you with an interest in history. Alternatively, visit the Port Dock Brewery Hotel which offers a comprehensive range of craft and real ales.

Be a ‘culture vulture’ at the Galleries of North Terrace

If cultural pursuits are more your thing, then pay a visit to Adelaide’s most elegant boulevard- North Terrace, which plays host to a smattering of the city’s most famous cultural institutions. The State Parliament, the South Australian Museum and the Botanic Gardens are all within close proximity.

Shop your heart out

Adelaide’s East End at Rundle Street is a renowned retail district, hosting a mix of boutique purveyors of unusual gifts and designer label clothing. Refuel and relax in any one of the cafes and coffee shops that are scattered throughout this area.

Adelaide has many popular beaches. Both Henley and Grange beaches enjoy a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere with the obligatory wooden piers, beachside cafes and old-school pubs. If you’re looking for the ultimate family-friendly beach experience, then pack the car and head to Semaphore where you’ll find an esplanade, fish’n’chip shops, a play park and a safe swimming zone.

Enjoy the wildlife

If the beach doesn’t satisfy your desire to get close to nature, then go to Adelaide zoo, home to over 1,800 animals including kangaroos, koalas and a whole host of other native species. Want more? Then there are dolphin-watching and swimming cruises available at the nearby marina.

Eat and drink your way around Adelaide’s Laneway Bars

South Australia is well-known for its fruity, fulsome red wines, and Adelaide’s Laneway Bars are the ideal place to try them. The Peel-Leigh Street precinct is home to some of the best of these bars. If you start to feel hungry, then don’t worry. You can find everything from tapas to Serbian cuisine in and around Laneway.

Head for the hills

The Adelaide Hills not only provide a stunning vista, but are home to a wealth of food and wine producers. Explore this picturesque part of Adelaide and quench your thirst at one of the many vineyards that are open to visitors.
