Development of one of the largest oil discoveries of the past decade has been given the green light as ExxonMobil have announced their intention to proceed with the first phase of development for the Liza field off the coast of Guyana.
ExxonMobil has announced it's final investment decision to proceed with the Liza gas field development off the coast of Guyana
The Liza Phase 1 development will include a subsea production system and a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel designed to produce up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day.

Costing over $4.4 billion, ExxonMobil expect production to begin by 2020, less than five years after discovery of the field.

The Liza field is located around 190 kilometres offshore in water depths of between 1,500 and 1,900 metres, and forms part of the Stabroek Block.

Announcing the project, Liam Mallon, president of ExxonMobil Development Company, said:

“We’re excited about the tremendous potential of the Liza field and accelerating first production through a phased development in this lower cost environment.”

As Mallon’s comment indicates, this agreement is one of the few large deepwater projects progressing as a low-price environment persists, with oil prices continuing to hover at around $50 per barrel. Research from Wood Mackenzie suggests that the Liza field contains enough oil to break even at $46 a barrel in Brent.

Does Exxon’s final investment decision to proceed with the Liza oil field development mark the beginning of recovery for the Oil & Gas industry?

Perhaps only time (and the markets) will tell…
