As part of its ambition to become Europe’s hub for space mining, Luxembourg has this week announced a deal with Kleos Space, a newly created company that specialises in geolocation services and the development of space infrastructure.

Kleos Space is just one of the many companies that have made Luxembourg their base of operations in recent years. Luxembourg has become a centre of attraction for these ambitious start-ups since the country launched it’s programme to promote the mining of asteroids in 2016.

At the core of the new deal lies a commitment from Kleos Space to collaborate with EmTroniX, a Luxembourg-based electronics developer, and the Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), to speed up the development of in-space manufacturing technology.

Ultimately, Luxembourg hopes to have established its own space agency by the end of 2017.

The deal is only the latest in a number of developments concerned with space-mining. Only recently Luxembourg passed a law that defines the conditions companies must fulfil to obtain a licence for launching a space mining mission.

Luxembourg has also partnered with Deep Space, a US-based space mining company, to develop Prospector-X, a small and experimental spacecraft that will test technologies for prospecting and mining near-Earth asteroids after 2020.

With geologists claiming that asteroids are typically packed with iron ore, nickel and other precious metals at much higher concentrations than those found on earth, expect Luxembourg to be only the first of many countries that venture into space mining.
