The Port of Rotterdam Authority have joined forced with global Gases and Chemicals innovator - Air Liquide – to transform a major European transportation route with the addition of 25 hydrogen fuelling stations by 2025.  This initiative aims to enable 1,000 hydrogen-powered, zero-carbon trucks to take to the roads connecting the Netherlands to Western Germany, through Belgium, in the next 5 years.

The initiative has attracted many supply chain stakeholders to join the project, including truck manufacturers such as VDL Groep, Iveco/Nikola, to transport companies Vos Logistics, Jongeneel Transport and HN Post, as well as leading hydrogen fuel cell companies.  Further companies are expected to join the project as it develops.

As one of the largest European projects for the development of hydrogen-powered trucks and related infrastructure, there are many significant benefits of this initiative including the vast improvement in air quality throughout each country involved.  FID is expected towards the second half of 2022, with Feasibility studies now underway to assess the entire value chain of the project.

Air Liquide are a front-runner in developing hydrogen technologies and applications around the world, having designed and installed over 120 filling stations around the world to date.  Recent successes in Japan show how valuable and beneficial hydrogen technologies are when implemented to eliminate carbon emissions from transportation.  It is now possible to drive across the entire country and find several hydrogen stations in each major city along the way, conquering the challenge of clean transportation and improving air quality nationwide.
