The Market for skilled Java Developers

In 2016, annual growth in the Malaysian labour market exceeded 0.7%, with the total number of people employed rising to 14.8 million, by December 2016.  Over 144,000 people are employed in the country’s Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector, which has enjoyed remarkable growth over the last two decades and is now regarded as one of the larger sectors in Malaysia.

Computer Programming is the largest sub-sector of ICT based on the number of employees engaged and total salaries paid, and the second largest sub-sector based on gross output value. 

The volume of supply and demand for Java Developers around the world is growing year-on-year, with over 3 million qualified and skilled workers worldwide.  Of the 60,000+ workers who are skilled in computer programming in Malaysia, it is estimated that up to 26,000 have experience working as a Java Developer either in Malaysia or elsewhere around the globe.

The Java Developers in Malaysia are strongly concentrated in 2 major cities: Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, correlating with the locations of Head, Regional and Technical offices and sites of the major corporations who reside in Malaysia.

The data also shows strong correlation with the locations of the 115 universities and technical educational facilities in the country, who produce the promising local talent for the ICT and engineering industries.  Local institutes produce around 9,000 ICT graduates annually.  This is supported by many initiatives promoting the development of ICT talent and education within the country such as the MSC Malaysia organisation, the professional certification program and the e-Aspirasi campaign promoting ICT as a career, in schools.  Malaysia is certainly a prospering hotspot for current and future technical expertise.

Developer talent in Malaysia also comes with a diverse array of experience - the majority holding 6 to 10 years of involvement in ICT.  Over 90% of Java Developers hold more than 3 years of experience in the sector, with much of this being gained in-country.

In 2015, total labour costs for the ICT sector in Malaysia were RM9.5 billion; the average employee in the sector earnt RM65,728, almost identical to the RM65,686 earnt by a worker in the Computer Programming sub-sector of ICT in Malaysia.
