In an attempt to wrestle control of a larger share of the global offshore wind power market, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is working on an offshore wind turbine with an output of 10MW- two megawatts more than the current record holder.
The global offshore wind market is set to grow sixfold by 2030, hence Mitsubishi is gearing up to take advantage of increased market demand.
The global offshore wind market is set to grow sixfold by 2030, reaching a cumulative capacity of 115 gigawatts (compared with 17.6 gigawatts today), so it’s no surprise to see power companies gearing up to take advantage of the expanding market demand.

According to a report in the Nikkei Asian Review, development of the 10MW turbine will be carried out by MHI Vestas Offshore Wind, a joint venture between Mitsubishi Heavy and Denmark’s Vestas Wind Systems, which is the world’s second largest offshore wind turbine maker.

Rival turbine makers such as General Electric and Siemens Gamesa are also developing large-scale turbines. General Electric’s project will see the creation of a 12MW turbine- but not until 2021. Siemens Gamesa has announced a plan to complete a 10MW+ turbine by 2024 or 2025.
