More high-skills jobs to be created as UK construction sector transforms

The UK Government’s decision to fund a new £72 million Core Innovation Hub will speed up the transformation of the country’s construction industry, creating a wealth of new high-skills jobs and opportunities for new groups to gain employment.
A new £72m Core Innovation Hub is expected to transform the UK construction industry, improving productivity and creating a range of new high-skills jobs
With the UK construction industry’s productivity lagging behind many other industries, the new Core Innovation Hub will help to lead a transformation in construction, making it more productive as well as simultaneously creating new, high-value jobs.

The Centre will focus on research and development in digital and offsite manufacturing, the introduction of more standardised modular components, the use of Virtual Reality, and the development of construction techniques and processes that will remove some of the risks and create safer, more efficient work.

Many of these techniques and technologies are used and proven in other sectors, such as automotive manufacturing, but will be a first for the construction industry.

With the UK construction industry being one of the country’s largest employers- it is estimated to employ around 9 per cent of the total UK workforce, equating to around 3.1 million people- it is hoped that the developments and innovations spurred by the Core Innovation Hub will not only create more high-skills jobs, but enable people to enter the industry from a wider range of backgrounds.

Aside from the £72 million in government funding, the Core Innovation Hub is also being supported by the Manufacturing Technology Centre, the Building Research Establishment and the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Digital Built Britain, as part of the Transforming Construction Alliance (TCA).

Commenting on the launch of the Core Innovation Hub, Keith Waller, Programme Director for the Transforming Construction Alliance, said:

“I am delighted to be leading the Transforming Construction Alliance in its mission to deliver the Core Innovation Hub project, and boost productivity and performance in the construction sector. I look forward to working alongside government, industry and the talented teams at MTC, BRE and CDBB to realise the vision of a transformed sector”.
