From 2023 the 700,000 people a day who use the Piccadilly line on the London Underground will be stepping on to brand new metro trains built by Siemens Mobility it has been revealed this week. The German conglomerate has signed a contract with London Underground to design and build 94 new generation Tube trains worth around £1.5 billion.

The new ‘Inspiro London’ trains will replace the current fleet of trains which have been in operation since the 1970s. The new design of the Inspiro fleet will significantly increase capacity and throughput on the Piccadilly line, and should also offer an improved passenger experience including air-conditioning, more space, and improve accessibility.

As part of the deal, Siemens Mobility will be responsible for covering the supply of spares for a period of five years beginning with the commissioning of the first trains in 2023.

“Our new metro trains for London will significantly increase capacity and frequency on the Piccadilly line. At the same time, they will offer tube users substantially improved passenger experience. Our services will support London Underground over the trains’ full lifecycle to ensure that they serve the London public with the highest reliability and availability,” said Sabrina Soussan, CEO of Siemens Mobility.

Nigel Holmes, Managing Director of London Underground, commented on the agreement with Siemens, saying:

“The introduction of new trains on the Piccadilly line will significantly improve the journeys of millions of our customers, providing more frequent and more reliable trains for decades to come. This order will mean the replacement of the 1970s Piccadilly line fleet, with delivery of the new trains starting in 2023, and will help address crowding on the line as London’s population continues to rise”.

The new fleet is sure to benefit the commuters of London, but will it benefit the UK’s engineering workforce?

Hopefully.

Transport for London and Siemens Mobility are currently examining options for local manufacture of the fleet in the UK with assistance provided by Siemens Mobility’s global centre for excellence in Vienna, Austria. If UK manufacture of the fleet proceeds it is likely to occur in Goole, Yorkshire where Siemens recently announced it would be building a large rail manufacturing facility which will create up to 700 jobs.
