The Nuclear Workforce Assessment provides an annual forecast of skills supply and demand across the entire nuclear sector new build, operations, decommissioning, research and defence activities.

The findings of the latest report have been summarised as follows:

  • The total workforce programme demand for 2017 is 87,560.
  • The peak demand in 2021 is now forecast at 100,619.
  • From 2016 to 2021 the forecast average required inflow, including replacement and expansion demand, is 6830 FTEs per annum (not all necessarily long term replacements).
  • With some significant variations across the industry, women form an average of 22% of the workforce across the industry, ranging from 14% in trades to 36% in business.

  • The report also outlines those occupations where future pinch points are considered to be most likely. If you possess a background in one of these disciplines, you are likely to be in demand in the coming years:

  • Safety Case Preparation.
  • Control and Instrumentation.
  • Reactor Operation.
  • Site Inspectors.
  • Project Planning and Control.
  • Commissioning Engineers.
  • Electrical Engineers.
  • Steel Fixers.
  • Concretors.

  • With 80% the nuclear workforce using skills that are shared with other industries, there is also potential for significant inter-industry transfers, the report notes.

Dr Fiona Rayment OBE, the Chair of the NSSG, commented that “an evidenced-based understanding of the skills required by the nuclear sector, and by when, is fundamentally important to developing a skills pipeline to meet the sector’s skills requirements.”
