Projekt Grenadier: Building the world's toughest 4 x 4

When Jaguar Land Rover announced that production of the legendary Defender would cease in January 2016, the world’s off-roading community mourned its loss.

It seemed that the spirit of the Defender was destined to fade away into the annals of history- especially in a modern automotive market in which genuine 4 x 4s are a dying breed.

That was until one man decided to do something about it.

As a successful business man, extreme sports enthusiast and global adventurer, Jim Ratcliffe had been a long-time fan of the Land Rover Defender. When production of the Defender ceased, he spotted a gap in the market that could be filled by a tough, uncompromising 4 x 4.
Have you go the skills to help Jim Ratcliffe make his Projekt Grenadier off road vehicle a reality? Fircroft is recruiting engineering, technical and business professionals today.

So, he set out to build it.

Thus, Projekt Grenadier was born.

Speaking to Auto Express, Jim Ratcliffe outlined his vision behind the project and plans for production of the as-yet unnamed off roader:

“The Land Rover Defender was the world’s most famous car, it conquered the planet. Many people have lamented its demise as it still fulfils a great function, but now there’s a gaping hole for a world class 4 x 4.”

“It might sound arrogant to think we can fill that gap, but we have the confidence. We want to build something that looks cool and retains all the off-road ability of the Defender, plus it has to be reliable. This car will provide a step-change in reliability. If we can deliver that, I  have no doubt it will be a success when it arrives in 2020-2021.”

Ratcliffe has been open about his desire to manufacture the vehicle in the UK- only viable at this stage with some support from the Government. It is estimated that Projekt Grenadier could directly create 1,000 jobs, and indirectly between 5,000 and 10,000. As manufacturing talks continue, there is no doubt however that this will be spiritually British car, with a significant British workforce- and a world class off roader.

Whilst exact details on the specifications of the vehicle are scant at present, it has been confirmed by the Projekt Grenadier team that several different engine options will be offered with a 3.0-litre diesel and hybrid model for the UK and a 4.0-litre petrol engine for US customers. In addition, it’s been reported that there will be the choice of three different model variants, with a short wheelbase primarily for the UK market plus a mid-size model and a 130 wheelbase for Europe and the US.
As many as 1000 automotive jobs could be created by Jim Ratcliffe's Projekt Grenadier, and Fircroft is recruiting for them now!

The project is developing at pace, currently on track to create a new British 4x4 by the end of 2020. The question is, do you have what it takes to help build it?

Here at Fircroft, we’ve teamed up with Projekt Grenadier to help them source the engineering, technical and business professionals they need to bring this exciting 4 x 4 to life.
