Repsol to develop three new renewable energy projects in Spain

Repsol has announced that it will be developing three major new renewable projects in Spain – two wind farms and a solar power plant – which will have a combined installed capacity of 800 MW. The projects represent another step in Repsol’s plans to become a low-emissions energy operator.

The two wind projects will be situated in the regions of Aragon and Castilla y Leon whilst the photovoltaic solar plant will be located in Andalucia.

The projects will consolidate Repsol’s position as a major player in the generation of low-emissions electricity on the Iberian Peninsula, with a total installed capacity of 2,952MW, and planned projects worth an additional 1,083MW.

Repsol’s electricity and gas unit will operate and manage these new projects which are currently in different execution phases. Each project is located an area favourable to its respective generation type. Combined, it’s estimated that the new projects will save 2.3 million tons of CO2 emissions each year compared to the same amount of power generated from coal.

The new renewable projects already have land secured as well as a guaranteed connection to the electricity transport network. The energy they generate will supply Repsol’s existing client portfolio, which currently totals 890,000 clients (a 19% increase from the start of the electricity and gas unit eight months ago), as well as new users.

These projects represent Repsol’s growing movement towards becoming an integrated electricity provider. Following the presentation of the update to its 2020 strategy in June 2018, Repsol took a significant first step on November 2nd by incorporating the non-regulated, low-emissions businesses of Viesgo and its retail business, to become a major player in the Spanish electricity market and strengthening its position as a multi-energy provider the generates electricity using all technologies except coal and nuclear.

Repsol’s strategic plan through 2020 includes investments in low-emissions businesses totalling 2.5 billion euros, with the objective of reaching 2.5 million retail power and gas customers in Spain in 2025, with a market share exceeding 5%.
