Saudi Aramco has awarded 34 contracts worth a total of $18 billion to increase production capacity at the Marjan and Berri oilfields, increasing the share of locally sourced materials and creating new jobs.

The contracts for the engineering, procurement and construction of the fields’ increment programs are intended to increase capacity by 550,000 barrels per day of Arabian Crude Oil and 2.5 billion standard cubic feet per day of gas.

It’s expected to create thousands of direct and indirect job opportunities within Saudi Arabia - particularly for Saudi nationals.

“These two programs will significantly enhance Saudi Aramco’s oil production and gas processing capabilities, both strengthening our position as the leading integrated energy supplier and meeting growing long-term demand for petroleum,” said Amin H. Nasser, president and CEO of Saudi Aramco.

“These investments will support our continued focus on employing best-in-class technologies, well completion, and reservoir management practices. It will enable Saudi Aramco to further reduce the carbon intensity of our crude oils, supporting our strategy of reducing emissions while providing energy to those who need it.”

16 companies were awarded the contracts, with 50% going to Saudi-based firms. Contractors working on the projects will be required to maximise procurement of materials and equipment from local suppliers and manufacturers. These measures are part of Saudi Aramco’s In-Kingdom Total Value Add Programe (IKTVA) goals, which aim to increase the company’s locally-sourced goods and services to 70% by 2021.

The contracts are focused around two increment programs.

The Marjan development program aims to increase offshore production of Arabian Medium Crude Oil by 300BNCD, 2.5 BSCFD of gas and 360 MBVD of C2+NGL from the field. It involves construction of a new offshore gas oil separation plant and 24 offshore oil, gas and water injection platforms. The Tanajib onshore oil facilities will also be expanded, and a new gas plant, cogeneration facility, water desalination facility and transfer pipelines will be constructed.

The Berri Increment program aims to add 250,000 barrels of Arabian Light Crude per day from the Berri offshore field. A new gas oil separation plant in Abu Ali Island will process 500,000 barrels of Arabian Light Crude Oil per day, and an expansion of the existing gas processing facilities at the Khursaniyah gas plant will process 40,000 barrels of associated hydrocarbon condensate. In addition, the program will involve a new water injection facility, two drilling islands, 11 oil and water offshore platforms and 9 onshore oil production and water supply drill sites.
